Eh.
Not for nothing, but dude doesn’t really do it for me.
Diggs’ first film was 1998’s How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Diggs’ portrayal of Winston Shakespeare, boy toy to Stella Payne (Angela Bassett), was dull, like most of the roles I’ve seen him in.
Taye Diggs’ attempt at mimicking a Jamaican accent was equally unimpressive. If you’re going to do dialect, do it. Train for it. Practice and study. I’m reminded of Al Pacino’s terrible Cuban accent in Scarface (1983). Yet, his performance was still seen as credible because he is Al Pacino and because of the other elements of his performance. And I think the cinematic virtues of the film overshadowed his faux pas. But the mistake is inexcusable, even for him.
Diggs co-starred as the bandleader in the 2002 film, Chicago. And his previous credits include lead roles in The Best Man (1999) and Brown Sugar (2002). He wasn’t bad in these films. Maybe he was good in them.
I think Hollywood likes him. They certainly like his body (Djimon, you’re not the only one). I figure they must since we often see him in his underwear and in Stella, we get a view from the back… and there is no underwear. I’m just sayin’.
I haven’t seen Diggs’ other work except for a few moments of one episode of his TV series, Kevin Hill (now, cancelled).
But my initial thought about Taye Diggs is…
Eh.

The only flick I liked Taye Diggs in was The Best Man & honestly some of his co-stars stole his shine. Actually, it was the interesting storyline that I liked more than his performance - that's what I remember about this movie.
And comments he's made over the past year or so about not being accepted because he's married to a white woman (albeit probably true) didn't make me like him any more & surely isn't endearing him to AA females, which whether he likes it or not he'll probably need to really succeed in show business. Ask Wesley Snipes.
I must admit, I saw Kevin Hill 2x-3x & once it started growing on me it was cancelled.
He's a good looking guy & Hollyweird obviously likes him but ... I have to agree w/The Black Actor. Sumthin sumthin just ain't right & can't put my finger on it.
I think if this Grey's Anatomy spinoff he's on (don't even remember the name) tanks, his name may be mud for a minute.
Now here is one brother who gets chance after chance after chance & just ain't making it happen, daggone shame.

Yup. He continues to get chance after chance. That's why I figure Hollyweird likes him. They keep giving him chances. This is not done for other black actors (is it?), like it is done for him. Yup. Those comments didn't help at all. You are right. I think he lost much of his AA fan base due to that. I totally agree with your comments about Diggs/Wesley and the sistahs.

First things first, you got a good thing going here....keep it up:-)
What do you think about The Rock, Vin Diesel? In your opinion , do you classify these guys as "Black" or as "multiracial"? Have you ever wonder what their target demographic is?

Taye Diggs must have a very good agent...Kevin Hill,Daybreak and the G.A. spinoff...someone likes him.How many times do you see that with any actor especially of color?

I know. He gets chance after chance after chance!

I can't think of one black actor that gets the kind of grace Taye is getting right now. If he can't make something happen (rather, get someone a return on their investment(s)) then eventually he'll be DOA in Hollyweird. ITA that his agent must have some serious connects!

I totally agree with you guys.
@ Shion
Thank you for the kind words. :)
As for the Rock and Vin Diesel. I have yet to see one of Rock's movies. Interestingly, I didn't even have him on my list and never thought of him. How dumb am I? He seems to be up and coming. Okay. I'm on it. I'll post about Rock in the future. As for Vin Diesel, I've seen him in a few flicks but my memory is vague. That was "Boiler Room" wasn't it? I think I liked him in this movie. I saw "Fast and Furious" a while ago but my memory is fuzzy. I'm a dummy. Vin wasn't on my list, either. I'll post about him in the future. Interesting Q about black or multiracial. Without thinking about an answer to your Q, I always kinda see Vin Diesel as black and Rock as multiracial. That's a good Q. I suppose if I thought about it, I'd thinkn of Vin Diesel as multiracial, too. Yes, I have wondered who their target demographic is. I think they both likely enjoy "crossover" appeal; certainly "The Rock" must. No?

I know this may offend some people so as a preface to my comment on Taye Diggs, I apologise if I offend anyone!
first, I agree with Kimi about his co-stars taking the shine in the Best Man. The ensemble cast in that film is fantastic and he is just bland and boring.
I cannot stress enough why I think he is a bland and boring enough. He doesn't come across inspiring or even relatively passionate.
I don't want to be labelled a hater but I am very interested in black actors and he just feels so...uninterested.
Besides the fact he is a bloody misogynist against his own kid!
--Rant over :)

@ Aulelia
LOL! Aulelia... I'm thinkin' you don't like Taye Diggs, either. :)

ha ha. :) I said to myself, "I didn't know he had kids."

I would like to know if Taye Diggs is a bonfide homosexual or not? Not what you think about Taye but if it is true or not?
Posted by: Jerrilyn Mitchell | March 15, 2008 at 10:45 PM
@ Jerrilyn
I've never heard rumors or rumblings about him being a homosexual. And I don't have any reason to believe he is. He is married. Of course, that doesn't make a difference. But I've never heard this about him (or observed this in him). So, I wouldn't know.
