Anybody Know Which Movie This Is?

My old post, Do Black Guys Die First?,reminded me of this question.

This has been bugging me since the beginning of the blog.  I wanted to talk about this but for the life of me, I can’t remember the movie.

All I remember is this…

There was a black man (I can’t remember the actor but he may have been dark-skinned).  Anyway, this man was working in tandem with another man or a group.  They were trying to kill or harm a white woman (I can’t remember the actress).  They may have been trying to kill her husband, too.  I remember she was pregnant and had a broken leg (and used a crutch, if I’m not mistaken).  The sequence in question was astounding.  Miraculously, single-handedly, she was able to overtake him and murder him.  I do believe he was armed; with a knife perhaps?

It was so preposterous, it was laughable.  :)

For Godssakes, does anybody know this gotdam movie?

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

In connection with my post about movie titles, another question is…

    

Has there ever been a movie poster that has influenced your decision to see a film?

    

For example, I knew, the moment I looked at the First Sunday poster, I wasn’t going to see the film.  I won’t bore you with the details as to what I “saw” in the poster.  Suffice it to say, I just knew I wasn't going to see the pic.

    

It probably didn’t help that every single weekday, for about two or three weeks, that poster was in the train station, on the platform that my train arrives on; so I saw it all the time.

Awards - The Black Ones

As far as cinema goes, people care about the Oscars; maybe even the Golden Globe Awards.  I think they care about the SAG Awards.  I don’t know if people care about the other 2,987,642 awards.  At some point, it becomes overkill and renders aspects of the award process virtually meaningless.

But there are the “black” awards, i.e. Black Reel Awards, BET Awards and NAACP Image Awards.

Black Actors: Say "Cheese"

What do you think about celebrity gossip?

Wow.  I think it’s intense.  What a price to pay; though not for everyone; not for the attention whores.

Whether or not the attention is welcome, A-list to D-list celebrities are photographed, quoted, videotaped, and observed with a ferocity unknown to the black actor of yesteryear.

I am unaware of any black paparazzi like those paps that trail Britney Spears.  Nevertheless, black actors are still under the microscope; since this is the day of the blog -- the black gossip blogs; and sometimes they can be unforgiving.  :)  At the same time, they keep has-beens, Z-Listers people at the forefront of fame; people, who would have otherwise faded into oblivion long, long ago.

Celebrity gossip is popular because many average Joes are intimately interested in the celebrities they favor; so much so, that they want to know them personally; maybe to praise them; maybe to worship them, maybe to be mean to them, etc.   Regardless of the reasons, celebrity gossip sells.

Can black actors’ work on the silver screen (when it’s good and respected) supersede whatever unflattering things we “know” about them reported as gossip?

I was wondering what -- actually, I'm very interested in -- what you guys like to see. 

What is your preferred genre?

Action, Adventure, War, Westerns, Romance, Sci Fi, Horror, Drama, Comedy, Epics / Historical, Crime/Gangster?  Other genres or subgenres I haven't mentioned?

As for me, I enjoy drama; psychological thrillers; suspense; supernatural.

Okay, friends:  This was bday weekend (Saturday was bday).

Because i'm slightly hungover and don't feel like thinking, i could only manage the following post for Monday; haven't had chance to prepare anything over the last few days.

One of the following actresses played a lesbian character and kissed a woman on-screen.  Was it...

Regina King, Angela Bassett or Nia Long?

That was supposed to be the end of the post.  But I wanted to add that I give a lot of credit to the actress who did this -- and to any black actor who does this -- and who is unafraid to play a gay character... especially one who kisses their same sex partner on screeen...

A New Day For Black Cinema? You. Me.

No groups.  No associations.  Just you.  Just me.    

There's much chatter going on in the afrosphere about what 2008 will bring for black cinema.  Many are hopeful that we will see good things this year.  Many believe this year will make a difference.  People talk about things that are in the pipeline and I believe there is a collective hope and desire that finally, we will begin to experience good things in black cinema.    

With that said, I ask what can you do?  What are you committed to doing to do your part?    

It can be anything.

(And I don't mean starting a blog.  There's a place for us -- bloggers who blog about black cinema.  Some might say a need.  That's all fine and good -- to talk about it.  Obviously, I believe it is extremely necessary we do so.)

Starting a blog is just fine.  But I do believe that for those desiring to produce even the tiniest change, the smallest of efforts can be undertaken to effect such change and express our rage dissatisfaction with what we are seeing.  So, the question remains... what will we do?  Write a letter to a studio exec?  Write 200?  Withhold your financial support?  Learn to write a script?  Become a casting agent?  Blah Blah Blah.  In one of her posts, the Invisible Woman urged us to support black film festivals.  Maybe that is something you or I could do.   

I'm not the activist type or anything.  I'm just askin'.
