Oscar-nominated Oprah Winfrey was surprisingly good as Sofia in The Color Purple (1985).
When Beloved (1998) was released, I was going through my, “I’m tired of seeing slaves, massa’s, dirt roads and women with rags on their head” stage. I didn’t care if Beloved was a brilliant story by a brilliant author adapted by a brilliant screenwriter. I didn’t care if it had a brilliant cast and brilliant performances. I refused to watch it. Stupid or not, this was my feeling. It still is, in large part. I believe Beloved was well received -- perhaps a commercial and/or artistic success. I probably missed a very good performance by Oprah -– and probably a good piece of filmmaking.
I do the blog now. So, I’ll get around to watching it.
Even though The Color Purple is the only pic I’ve ever seen Oprah in, it was enough. It was obvious she had talent as an actress.
One day she’ll stop doing the Oprah Winfrey Show. Maybe then, she’ll give money away to black female bloggers or something do more acting. I’d like to see her do more acting.
